Investigation of Wear Characteristics in Chain Sprockets Treated with Plasma Nitriding
Abstract
The wear characteristics of chain sprockets are crucial for performance and longevity, particularly in high-stress applications. Plasma nitriding, a widely used surface modification technique, is known for enhancing the wear resistance of metallic components. This study investigates the wear behavior of chain sprockets treated with plasma nitriding. A series of controlled wear tests were conducted, comparing the performance of plasma-nitrided sprockets to untreated ones. The results reveal a substantial reduction in wear rates for the nitrided sprockets, attributed to enhanced surface hardness and improved wear resistance. Surface morphology analysis corroborates these findings, demonstrating significant improvements in the wear properties due to the plasma nitriding process. This research underscores the potential of plasma nitriding in extending the service life of chain sprockets across various mechanical systems.
